Happy St. Stephen's Day to all Deadheads who celebrate!
Saint Stephen with a rose
In and out of the garden he goes
Country garden in the wind and the rain
Wherever he goes the people all complain
Stephen prospered in his time
Well, he may and he may decline
Did it matter, does it now?
Stephen would answer if he only knew how

December 26 is indeed St. Stephen's Day, the veritable Feast of Stephen upon which Good King Wenceslas looked out. St. Stephen was the first Christian martyr in the New Testament, he was stoned to death. I recommend that you don't get *that* stoned.
Here's more about the song, including bits of an interview with lyricist Robert Hunter.
