The Belmont Goats

In this photo of Duchess from the original Goat Field on SE Belmont in 2014, you clearly get a good example of how a goat’s eyes can rotate in their sockets, keeping the pupil parallel to the horizon.

This is so that the goat can lower their head to the ground while browsing or foraging but still maintain their wide field of view which allows them to keep an eye out for potential predators.

@thebelmontgoats Neat! So, it's the actual eyeball that rotates in the socket or does the pupil reconfigure?

@scuttlefield The eyes themselves rotate, apparently up to around 50°, which is about right for the angle their head takes when lowered to eat from the ground.
